Compare Anti-Snoring Mouthpieces

What is ZQuiet and How Does it Work?

For chronic snorers (and their suffering sleep partners), there are two main types of anti-snoring mouthpieces to achieve a quieter night’s rest.

  • A Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD) eases snoring by pushing your jaw forward to keep the tongue from falling back and blocking the airway.
  • A Tongue Retaining Device (TRD) restrains the tongue so that it won’t fall into the airway and obstruct breathing which is a leading cause of snoring.

ZQuiet’s anti-snoring mouthpiece is a Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD) designed to help with tongue obstruction. Advancement refers to “pushing forward” which is what the mouthpiece does to your lower jaw.

The tongue is a long muscle that attaches at the back of your mouth and throat. A “tongue base snorer” is someone that’s noisy while sleeping because the base of their tongue drops back to block the airway. When the MAD pushes your jaw forward, it prevents the base from blocking your breathing.

How Does ZQuiet Compare to Other Mouthpieces?

As any consumer does with a product they’re considering, our anti-snoring mouthpiece assessments naturally involve comparing them with other similar products. Be it composition, adjustability, or price, we think it’s important to see how the ZQuiet stacks up to other mouthpieces.

Let’s look at ZQuiet construction, how it works, and whether this is a good solution for your snoring problem. ZQuiet’s two mouthpiece solution means you have two options to choose from, but they are almost identical aside from how far forward they move the jaw.

How ZQuiet is Different

Of the various MADs on the market designed to help stop snoring, ZQuiet differs in a couple of ways. First, it doesn’t mold to your bite. It’s simply a soft plastic mouthpiece that goes over your teeth, much like a tooth whitening tray might except there’s a second tray and they are hinged together.

Second, ZQuiet sends you two mouthpieces, distinctive in design. The two advance your jaw at different increments, so you get a different effect with each. They recommend you start with the one that pushes your jaw forward slightly less than the other.

A big differentiator is what the company calls its “living hinge.” Once in your mouth, the MAD allows you to open and shut your mouth with ease and keep “living” your life. You can talk, drink water, and breathe easy while wearing the mouthpiece.

Other Product Specifics

  • How Do You Fit the ZQuiet?

There is no boil-and-bite fitting for ZQuiet. It markets itself as being ready to use out of the box. However, there are some modifications you can make to get it to fit better in your mouth. There are two mouthpieces in the kit, each that pushes the jaw forward differently.

You’ll see right away that on one, the bottom part sticks further forward. The company recommends you start with the device that protrudes less. However, if either comes up too far on your gums and rubs the inside of your mouth, you can trim it.

The company’s official FAQs recommend that if you need a better fit to use small scissors to trim the soft plastic and then buff out the rough edges using an emery board or nail file. Aside from this, there is no other physical fitting or adjustment to make.

One recommendation they offer is to soften it by running it under warm/hot tap water before wearing. However, you should never put this mouthpiece in extremely hot water. The ZQuiet mouthpiece is a thermoplastic polymer that will melt if you overheat it.

  • How to Care for Your ZQuiet

Clean with warm water, dish soap, and a toothbrush. Do not use toothpaste to clean the ZQuiet – the manufacturer cautions that it could disintegrate the surface and cause discoloration.

  • Denture Friendly?

The ZQuiet should not be worn with dentures. It will press on them and cause discomfort and can damage them.

  • Bruxism Concerns?

Teeth grinders should find some relief from ZQuiet’s soft molded plastic that keeps your upper and lower jaws from interacting while you sleep. Grinding may reduce its lifespan.

  • Side Effects?

The mouthpiece may increase salivation because it props your mouth open. Alternately, you might experience dry mouth because of increased airflow on your tongue. The more aggressive of the two mouthpieces can cause some jaw soreness.
