Our experience with ZQuiet

Made from FDA-approved thermoplastic elastomers, the ZQuiet anti-snoring mouthpiece molds into your mouth and does not feel stiff or hard – which, if you’ve tried tons of anti-snoring devices before – is probably the most important thing to consider (aside from, of course, helping you stop snoring).

The ZQuiet mouthpiece works by advancing your lower jaw forward and prevents the tongue and soft tissue in the back of your throat from collapsing in the airway, which is what predominantly causes snoring.

You get two different sized mouthpieces in your ZQuiet mouthpiece kit . This ensures that you get the best fit for ultimate comfortability. Size 1 advances the jaw by 2mm while size 2 advances the jaw by 6mm. This is because some people only need a slight jaw advancement while others need more.

The hinged mouthpiece of the ZQuiet device is made from medical grade thermoplastic elastomer – it feels like a softer rubber version of most anti-snoring devices found on the market. While some people may prefer something harder, I actually like that the ZQuiet mouthpiece edges does not make my jaw feel as though they’re being propped open.

Points right off the bat for comfortability out of the box.

You can use the device straight out of the package unlike other anti-snoring mouthpieces that are boil and bite.

Should you feel that the ZQuiet device is a little too big or sharp for your gums, the ZQuiet website recommends trimming the edges with small scissors to improve fit and comfort. I didn’t need to but you can if you want to. It may take some people a little getting used to having their lower jaw slightly forward and it might take you a few nights to get used to sleeping with the device.

From the very first night, my partner reports no snoring from my end but I found myself waking up every couple of hours purely because I guess I wasn’t used to sleeping with anything in my mouth. ZQuiet also recommends starting out by using the device for a few hours each night until you get used to wearing the device for the entire night.

It took me around 6 nights to fully get used to wearing the ZQuiet anti-snoring device all throughout the night. My partner reports that I had a few short snoring episodes some nights but not as bad as when I wasn’t wearing the ZQuiet.

What I liked most about the ZQuiet was that it is one of the few snoring solutions made of soft plastic I have tried that also works as a mouth guard for those of us who grind our teeth when we sleep. I also liked the fact that it relies on and helps our natural breathing to reduce snoring rather than use any type of machinery.

Cleaning the ZQuiet device is easy, all you need is a clean, extra toothbrush, some warm water and a little bit of dish soap. ZQuiet also offers anti-bacterial cleaning solution which can either be bought separately or as part of the ZQuiet kit.

Here’s a thing I think is cute: ZQuiet also offers earplugs which I assume is for the person who you subject your snoring to.

Some ZQuiet reviews have reported drooling when using the device but with me what happened was dry mouth. This is probably the only thing I didn’t like about the ZQuiet.

But what exactly causes snoring?

Lifestyle choices factor a lot – not just in causing snoring and breathing problems but in getting better sleep. Some people’s snoring may even be caused by something a bit more serious such as obstructive sleep apnea. These lifestyle choices include smoking, drinking and excessive weight gain.

But other causes can factor in as well. These can be genetics, illness and how a person’s jaw naturally sits.

But what if you have sleep apnea, you may ask?

While you would definitely have to consult with an expert before using any anti-snoring products to help with your sleep apnea, quite a few people have had good experiences with the ZQuiet mouthpiece at helping them breathe better when they sleep which in turn, can help reduce snoring.

Studies have shown that those with severe sleep apnea have found CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines to be a bit more effective in helping treat their condition as opposed to using a mandibular advancement device like the ZQuiet device but – and this is a big but here – there are some people who find using CPAP machines to be constricting or that they suffer from dry mouth due to the mouth breathing that is brought about by some CPAP machines.

Others may find that dentist-designed mouthpieces can cost upwards of a thousand dollars. In this case, most people who suffer from sleep apnea prefer to use over-the-counter anti-snoring mouthpieces like the ZQuiet or combine their use with CPAP machines.

An anti-snoring mouthpiece like the ZQuiet device can help reduce snoring by opening your airways by advancing the lower jaw forward without the use of the more expensive dentist-designed mouth guards or invasive machines.
